Legalization of Medical Marijuana in
In 2009, there was a push by the students at Florida State University (FSU) to legalize marijuana. Floridians could vote for the first time next year to allow marijuana for medical use. A petition drive, started in Orlando, where a woman whose father has Parkinson's disease, would make the drug legal for any condition as prescribed by a doctor. They are collecting signatures on a petition to support a constitutional amendment that gives patients the right to grow, obtain, purchase and possess medical marijuana under a doctor's supervision. They need signatures from over 700,000 registered voters and donations exceeding $5 million. The deadline for the 2010 election ballot is February 1, 2010. So now its time to do our part.

Why should Florida Legalize Medical Marijuana?
The Fact is that there is no convincing scientific evidence that marijuana causes psychological damage or mental illness in either teenagers or adults. Some marijuana users experience psychological distress following marijuana ingestion, which may include feelings of panic, anxiety, and paranoia. But these are the side affects of using Marijuana. Not everybody will experience these affects.
Most people who smoke marijuana smoke it only occasionally. A small minority of Americans - less than 1 percent - smoke marijuana on a daily basis. An even smaller minority develop a dependence on marijuana. Some people who smoke marijuana heavily and frequently stop without difficulty. Others seek help from drug treatment professionals. Marijuana does not cause physical dependence. If people experience withdrawal symptoms at all, they are remarkably mild.
Legalized Marijuana keeps money in the U.S. and out of foreign cartels
Limiting the use of the drug intrudes on personal freedom
Legalization would mean a lower price; thus, related crimes (like theft) would be reduced
The drug generally isn't more harmful than alcohol or tobacco if used in moderation
There are medical benefits such as the those for cancer patients
It could be a source of additional tax revenues Street justice related to drug disputes would be reduced
Police and court resources would be freed up for more serious crimes
Drug dealers (including some terrorists) would lose most or all of their business
The FDA or others could regulate the quality and safety of drugs
Border/transportation officials & related resources could focus on immigration enforcement and protecting against terrorism.
Drug busts often trap young people in a flawed system that turns them into lifelong criminals
Like sex, alcohol, or cigarettes, marijuana is one of life's little pleasures for some peopl
Hemp has enormous potential and use
Marijuana is NEVER lethal
Marijuana and hemp have multiple positive attributes
If approved, the petition would create a constitutional amendment that reads as follows:
"(a) No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property or otherwise penalized for the cultivation, purchase, use or possession of marijuana in connection with the treatment of Alzheimer's, cachexia, cancer, chronic pain, chronic nervous system disorders, Crohn's disease, epilepsy and other seizure disorders, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, diseases causing muscle spasticity, or other diseases and conditions when recommended by a physician."(b) This section shall be self-executing. The legislature, however, may provide by general law for the voluntary registration of persons intending to exercise their rights hereunder and for the regulation of the distribution and sale of marijuana to persons intending to exercise their rights hereunder."(c) Nothing herein, however, shall be construed so as to prevent the legislature from enacting laws penalizing the operation of motor vehicles, boats, watercraft or aircraft while under the influence of marijuana or regulating the use of marijuana by minors. Similarly, all laws in effect at the time of adoption of this section penalizing the operation of motor vehicles, boats, watercraft or aircraft while under the influence of marijuana or regulating the use of marijuana by minors shall remain in force."
